GALLERY
I - OVERTURE
The
first of the galleries will introduce visitors to the cultural and social
aspects of the Vietnam era. From the Civil Rights struggles to the
sexual revolution, it was a period of tremendous change and upheaval.
This gallery will feature artifacts and images from the era including
clothing, popular entertainment, and key world figures.
International
events in the 1960s also contributed to shape the era, including the
Prague Spring, British pop culture, the Arab-Israeli War, and other
significant international events. At home, the Sixties conjure up images
of youthful optimism contrasted with the tragic assassinations of popular
leaders from John F. Kennedy to Martin Luther King.
For
many people, the Vietnam era is immediately associated with the decade
of the Sixties. Yet, it spans more than that decade, and the Sixties
were more than Vietnam, hippies, and counterculture. And the Vietnam
era is more complex than most people realize, even those who lived through
it. This Gallery will set the stage for the other exhibits and the rest
of the museum.
