The
aftermath of the Vietnam War will look at the steps toward reconciliation
and understanding that have taken place in the more than thirty
years since the war's end. For many years, veterans from this era felt
unappreciated and overlooked. Images in the popular media reinforced
those images, and reflected the homecoming many of them experienced.
Yet,
many Vietnam veterans began working to establish veteran's support groups,
build memorials to those who served, and keep alive the POW/MIA attempt
to locate those who remained unaccounted for. Many Vietnam veterans
have risen to levels of prominence in politics, entertainment, and the
business world, and these accomplishments will be recognized here.
The
steps to normalize relations with Vietnam, their moves toward a market
economy, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc will
all be examined in an effort to determine whether we truly "lost"
the war in Vietnam, in a global sense.
