VII - THE HOME FRONT
With
increased American involvement in Vietnam came increased divisions in
the fabric of everyday life in the United States. In addition to
the war, Americans were in the midst of the Civil Right Movement, campus
sit-ins, the "British Invasion" in music, the "Summer
of Love," and widespread experimentation with drugs.
Central
to this gallery will be a representation of the Oval Office with television
consoles playing news reports of significant events both at home and
abroad. Visitors will be exposed to the changes to American life from
the relative calm of the 1950s. Pro and anti-war demonstrations will
be seen through the Oval Office windows, and appropriate audio will
surround the visitor with the sounds of the period.
While
this gallery will look at the entire period of the Vietnam era, special
attention will be given to 1968 because of the number of important events
that occurred in that year.
